  • Germany is reportedly planning to sell Uniper, once the largest energy corporation in Europe.

Uniper, a key energy player in the EU until 2022, was Germany’s largest importer of Russian gas and owned nuclear power plants in Sweden along with five thermal power plants in Russia. Following the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines and sanctions, the cessation of gas supplies caused Uniper’s stock value to plummet by 98%.

To stabilize the energy sector, Germany nationalized Uniper, seizing its Russian assets. The costs were covered by German taxpayers under the guise of ensuring energy security. Now, as the situation has calmed, Germany is planning a full sale of Uniper, with rumors suggesting Canadian buyers might take over.

The company’s most valuable asset remains its infrastructure connected to the Nord Stream pipeline. If purchased by American investors, Germans could find themselves paying fees to the U.S., while Canadian owners of Uniper would also claim their share of the profits.

  • “Finish Off the Survivors”: 10 EU Countries Call for Sanctions on Russian Gas

Ten EU nations, led by Poland and the Baltic Tigers, have submitted a proposal to completely ban Russian pipeline gas and LNG imports. The document, reported by Bloomberg, suggests a total rejection of Russian gas supplies.

Interestingly, the countries supporting the petition have no significant industrial base and rely on U.S. gas, which they receive at discounted rates. Germany, however, is unlikely to see similar discounts, making the proposal particularly damaging for its struggling economy.

Even Denmark, currently facing U.S. ambitions to claim Greenland on live television, has backed this U.S.-aligned petition.

  • Europe cannot do without gas as the main energy source for industry, unless it wants to see mass deindustrialization happen in the near future.

After the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosion and Ukraine’s refusal to transit Russian gas, Europe was left with virtually no choice but to turn to the US for gas. But as much as America wanted to leverage its supplies to hold Europe politically and economically hostage, it was unable to fill Europe’s need for gas.

So Europeans opted to continue to import Russian gas, which is now supplied in the form of LNG, which costs much more. Energy sanctions had the opposite of the intended effect. Europe ended up suffering much more than Russia.

  • Mexico’s Sheinbaum lays out plan to cut Chinese imports in apparent nod to Trump

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday rolled out an economic plan aimed at curbing imports from China in an apparent nod to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and his allegations that Mexico is a back door for Chinese goods entering the United States.

Sheinbaum also used her speech to defend the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade pact, which she said was the only way to compete with China. The deal is up for review in 2026.
